6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
On the second day, God separated the waters upon the earth and created the atmosphere and the ozone. There is still no land, so it’s just one big ocean covering the entire globe. It’s interesting to note that there is enough water, even after separating some into the atmosphere, to cover the whole earth. This means that the flood in Noah’s time can and did cover all the land.
But why does it have to be on another day that God does this one thing. Does it take Him a whole day just to do separate some water? Of course not, we are told that He said and it was so. He is an infinite God, with infinite power, He doesn’t even need to say it really, just think it and it’s done.
So, then why did He choose to create everything in six days? We find the answer in Exodus when God spoke the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel, “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:11. God set a pattern for us to follow during the creation week. He did work on the first six days and rested on the seventh day, this seven day pattern is still in existence today, actually, most of us only work five days and rest for 2 days, but it is still the same seven day week.
It is also interesting that He didn’t work the whole 24 hours, He didn’t even work during the whole daylight time, He only spoke and the atmosphere is created, that probably took like 10 seconds at most. Again, this is just the pattern, it doesn’t mean we can just speak and have things done or only work 10 seconds a day, but I do think that we are not suppose to work all day every day, we need to take time to rest even on the work days. And definitely rest on one of the days of the week.
